processed food. i banished that almost completely from my diet - i do cheat sometimes. once i went primal/paleo whatever you want to call it, i dramatically cut back on sugar & processed foods. i made one small change in the kids' diets (i added kefir to their breakfast) to get more protein in their bellies. but i never thought to really and truly monitor their sugar past not letting them go to town on a bag of candy.
i took baby steps for myself and i'm going to do the same for the kids. case in point our cereal stash. i got rid of 5 boxes of pretty much all sugar cereals that i wouldn't dream of eating right now myself. I whittled it down to two kashi brand boxes and two trader joe's brands. we finished it this morning.
i am lazy. i need quick things to feed my kids. so here is the start of my new breakfast list that i brainstormed with T and i will be adding to it:
*quinoa or brown rice (made ahead) mixed with butter, cinnamon and honey (when T put me on to that a year ago, she swore it tasted like a cinnamon role, and she's right!)
*Yogurt and fruit (moving to full fat and plain...someday)
*apple/pear slices with peanut butter
*homemade waffles and pancakes with maple syrup (i would love to get them on a fruit compote or something...baby steps)
*kefir to drink
this list is loooooooong. this is what i have to get away from...

brown rice - I have a fantastic oven recipe that cooks two cups perfectly every time, want it?
ReplyDeletefull fat (whole milk, right?) yogurt - this is hard to find, especially without added sugar. the baby brands are even chock super full of sugar. i just bought "greek gods," which is whole milk but i bought the strawberry kind, so i'm sure it's fully of sugar. could you add honey/agave to plain as well as fruit? is that part of the bad list? i've done that and it's just as good.
sister!!!!! oh yea baby, whole fatty milk. it's so hard to find sometimes. i see 0% and 2% way more often. i plan on doing the plain with honey/agave/vanilla with fruit as soon as i'm out of what i currently have:) i'm just trying to stay under 10g of sugar on the flavored kinds right now since there are some great brands out there. i will look for the greek gods and check it out, i love it:)
Deleteand yes, i NEED the recipe and i'll post it too:)
DeleteBe careful with the honey, very high in sugars....even though it is natural may not be what you want for your baby girl at this time. :)Hearts, Emi's Mom
Deleteyou are so right! a little drizzle goes a long way:) so happy to see you here C!!! hearts back atcha xo
DeleteWhat is keifir and how do I use it and where do I get it?
ReplyDelete-stace ( I don't have a profile...need to work on that)
Hi Stace!!! this site explains it well - http://www.kefir.net/what-is-kefir/ think drinkable yogurt that's lactose free and full of probiotics:) I like the trader joe's brand and the lifeway brand that i can even find at aldi's sometimes! whoop whoop! i have seen it come in blueberry, strawberry, pomegranate and berry...i always get the strawberry:) 1 cup has 11g of protein!!! it's a meal in and of itself:)
Deletethat is a looongg list, it's scary when you look at the amount of ingredients in some things!
ReplyDeletei just keep thinking about how clark developed a semi-permeable cereal varnish...tasty.
